Last day of the year and I wake up feeling gross, and can't get out of bed for a few hours, but We made early landfall on Deception Island and were able to go visit Telefon Bay (Deception Island is the largest of the three recently active volcanic centers in the South Shetland Islands. It is ring shaped and 9 miles in diameter and the most recent eruption was in 1969.) It was so cool to see the Caldera from where the volcano had erupted in the late 1960s. And of course, my greatest joy of the day was my first experience with wild penguins!!
The birds were Chinstrap penguins and they all looked like the British guards but instead of their normal uniforms they were wearing little tuxes. The birds love the volcanic beach because of the abundant rocks to nest with and the sand is "warm".

Everyone was hovering and photographing like crazy. We went on a group hike up one of the glaciers and then came back down to shore to see the two Weddell seals that were just realaxing on the beach. They are so fat and lazy, just too cute! After taking in all of the wildlife, we reboarded the boat, sanitized our boots, signed in and remembered the quickly approaching holiday!

Roger decided to throw a crazy hat party for the New Year's celebration because of his amazing expedition leader hat that he had on the first day of the cruise.
We didn't make any with our group, but being out on deck with no coats was enough fun for us. It is going to be really hard to top a champagne toast to bring in a New Year when it is midnight and the sun is still high in the sky.
We helped host a dance party for all of the passengers, teaching them the Cupid Shuffle, and like true Georgia Bulldogs, the Soulja Boy dance. We had a great time, but I was still tired from the traveling, so I was in bed by 2. Lindsey and a few others stayed up with Vladimir until at least 4am, crazy kids.
